This is because there are several books that tackle different issues, so the question is which might be the right one for you.
For example, if your problem is your shyness and social anxiety, or if you want to improve your self-esteem, then you should opt to buy books that discuss those particular issues.
Do be careful with the books that you do pick however, and avoid basing your choice on the title alone, because you might end up taking home the wrong one,so to be sure therefore, read the overview of the book first.
There are bookstores that will allow customers to scan the pages of their books, so make sure that you can utilize this to your advantage.

If you have been buying self-help books for some time, you might have some favorite authors, or you might have your own ideas on whichauthor is better, and which one is not. If you are a first timer however, you should carefully consider the author by their credibility. There is the "about the author" section which is usually at the back of the book, so you may want to read that before checking the book out over the counter.
- Ask for professional help
Seeking assistance in choosing which specific book can help you best, is another way to do it. If you are undergoing counseling, then ask your therapist to point you to the right book that would further help you to build up your self-confidence. You might be fortunate if your therapist also writes books as well, but make sure that the topic discusses your problem areas.

At this point you should have some idea of what to look for in a book, but you still have to bear in mind, that reading self-help books is not an assurance by itself that you can build up your self confidence. You still need to work at it, and you have to apply everything that you have learned from the book which you have chosen, to your everyday life, and not simply depend on the book for everything.
These books are merely there as a guide to assist you when you decide to make changes to your life, but do please remember that books are not the solution to ecery problem, you yourself are the solution.
