Seven Ways To End Unnecessary Anxietyfrom: Allison Bright - Guest Contributor
Do you wear a day all out before it comes? Before you even step out of bed in the morning, do you feel apprehensive from your thoughts about the day ahead? Anxious and fearful thoughts drain your energy and you feel powerless. Worrying thoughts and images affect your health, relationships, your ability to concentrate, sleep and carry out ordinary tasks at work. You may even avoid situations because of the anxiety you have built up in your own mind.
How do you cause your own anxiety?
Feelings of anxiety are caused by fearful thoughts about the future. You don't feel anxious about the past and you can't feel anxious if you are being present - in the moment. Your fearful thoughts might be about: not being good enough, making a mistake, fear you won't cope, fear of being late, fear of not being in control - all fears about the future.
Wouldn't it be great if the thought of potentially stressful events didn't faze you. You accepted there would be events out of your control. You knew you would manage work the best you could and that would be good enough for everyone including yourself.
How to end your anxious thoughts
1. Imagine how you will feel 15 minutes after the successful completion of any potentially stressful events. Visualizing this immediately reduces the feelings of tension you are holding in your body. You can do this for any and every perceived stressful event.
2. Write a daily journal of all your fears before you start the day. This gets anxiety out of your body and gives you the opportunity to look more objectively at your concerns. Fears aren't facts.
3. Plan your day: When planning your day leave plenty of time between events to avoid time pressure. Plan 10 -15 minutes or more of free time for yourself.
4. Ask yourself: In the big scheme of things how important are today's events and is it really worth affecting my health and happiness over?
5. Remember how you have coped well with challenging events in the past. Focus on the strengths and resources you have to achieve what you want.
6. Focus on the things you can control and let go of the things you can't.
7. Become aware of your limiting beliefs about life and work eg. Work is hard, I get paid to carry the burden of stress. If I am not stressed, my work and I are not important.
Unless you are addicted to fearful thoughts or have a medical issue, feeling anxious can be a matter of choice. The long term benefits of health and happiness are well worth the effort it takes to end unnecessary anxiety.
