Why Spiritual People Have a Superiority Complex

from: Rohit S Verma - Guest Contributor

The one thing you may have observed about (some) self-described 'spiritual' people, is they just love talking about how spiritual they are...

They fail to realise there exists no formal prerequisite to being spiritual; we are all essentially spiritual, transcendent, mystic by nature. The experience of perpetual, random, contradictory thoughts places us within this realm by default. Whether one wishes to identify themselves as spiritual is immaterial; being human gives rise to such description.

However, many create their own benchmark for being spiritual and begin to see themselves as: 'more spiritual, more enlightened, more holy than others... " At this point one's inflated spiritual identity give rises to judgement. This is most evident when they talk (boast) in relation to the following topics:

  • Spiritual Practices and Rituals- How often do you pray and meditate? I try and fit in 4 hours daily...

  • Food Habits and Preferences - Don't you feel guilty eating innocent animals? I've been a vegan for 5 weeks now...

  • Temperament and Demeanour - Why are you always so angry? I've found my inner silence, now I'm always calm...

  • Attitudes Towards wealth - Is that your Mercedes? I sold mine recently and gave the money to a homeless shelter...

  • Perceived 'Spiritual' Activities - Do you really watch TV? I can't stand TV, I prefer reading scriptures and chanting...

All spiritual benchmarks are a self-righteous, vain attempt to place ourselves with a 'superhuman' category. Despite our personal labels, each of us will experience every human condition or desire at some point in time, including: anger, envy, pride, vanity, lust, greed. We will also experience fear, loneliness, depression - even thoughts of ending it all.

Despite our best efforts and intentions to be, 'good, perfect, holy' we will stumble, fall, make errors in judgments, and have regrets. We will also hurt those we love, even if we 'plan' against this happening.

But it's OK, it's all OK. Our actions are not our fault per se, or even of our choosing and volition. If they were, we'd NEVER EVER make any mistakes, and the concept of apologies and forgiveness would not exist. By virtue of the fact we have indiscriminate, fickle, arbitrary thoughts, any possibility of actions are liable to occur, at any given moment - that are indeed beyond 'our' control.

To beat oneself up by comparing ourselves to others (who we believe to be perfect / happier / more spiritual) or to cast stones to make ourselves feel superior, serves no purpose. All we can do, should do, is to accept our unique nature, without label or judgment, and stop trying to 'force change' upon ourselves and others...

Emotional Intelligence Trigger Videos

This is a very humorous video with a deeply serious content. In fact it is a "lecture" as one person commented, but that same person admitted that he learned so much from it. to!
