For a long time a common perception that emotions have nothing to do with success was widely held, and taking an even more extreme view, many believed that emotions do not only interact negatively with our decision making process, but may even also cause us to fail.
There are various definitions of what constitutes intelligence that human beings possess, and lack of one particular type, doesn't actually imply failure in the overall picture of life.
Some are naturally endowed with higher IQ scores, that gives them the advantage of having a larger storage capacity for information in effect, whereas Other people have the special ability to truly discern themselves. This is what is called intrapersonal intelligence.
Emotional intelligence therefore, is the ability to become sensitive to understand one's own emotions, and also the emotions that are displayed by other people. This in the end will be consciously monitored to serve as determining factors in creating decisions, and in putting up reactions to various stimuli.
Since we are dealing with the various aspects of emotions therefore, it is pretty obvious that there is no gray line between emotions and emotional intelligence. Emotions affect decision-making as well as our reactions to things and our moods and sentiments, and equally to our general disposition in a given situation.
Very often solutions do not come from the intellect, because it is a fact that too much thinking may even cause an effective paralysis of the mind. This is largely due to the fact that when we think too much for a solution, our minds can actually seem to clutter with possible answers, so that we end up going round in a complete circle achieve nothing. Proper analysis takes time, and it may therefore actually allow time for the aggravation of the problems to develop.
This is not meant to discourage anyone from analyzing their personal problems clearly, but we do not want you to enclose yourself with the idea of IQ alone being the only way to go as it were. There is more to intelligence than using your brainpower alone in creating decisions.
We were not inherently equipped with emotions at birth though. When we were born, we were likely to be like blank white pages so to speak, where various experieves need to be written before we ever find the concept of our reactions to emotions. Only as we age and therefore are exposed to spectrums of experiences, do we learn to react to the different types of emotions.
This is probably the reason why when we were children, we had no fear or anxiety over tripping on the floor, or doing something dangerous. After all we still had no idea what fear or anxiety was, or what dangerous experiences consisted of.
If you can determine the degree of your emotions, and the various reactions that are created during specific conditions, as well as having enough knowledge to realise how well you cope up with given situations, will all be helpful in gaining new insight of yourself. Knowing what the factors are that will create the rise of emotions in you, will be of great benefit to you as well.
Emotions are an inevitable part of our existence, and experts in this field have learned to evaluate emotional intelligence by determining its five components.
Management of emotions.
This generally covers the ability to handle one's emotions to fit a given situation. This also entails the proper mixture of emotions, and the realization of what caused a specific reaction to arise.
This is different from self criticism, mainly in the manner by which specific emotions are determined. It is the systematic observance of oneself to recognize feelings and moods as they happen.
This is evident in delayed gratification, in the positive use of emotions to channel emotions into goals, and in overall self control.
This is basically the sensitivity to other people's feelings, and perspectives of things in general.
Handling of relationships
This is one dimension of social intelligence which is very closely intertwined with emotional intelligence. This is bacause it covers the management of emotions to retain and harmonize relationships.
