The Use of Emotional Intelligence In Student Retention

from: Jim Holden - Staff Writer

Meeting the higher demands of studying does bot end with innate mental intelligence. It also requires the various abilities that a person may posses, and for one, emotional intelligence largely contributes to a person's ability to cope up with the present trends.

While there may not be a direct link between a student's retention capacity and his emotional intelligence, it is still very likely that students equipped with the proper level of emotional intelligence are more likely to succeed academically, than those who have relatively high IQ, yet lack EQ.

Having higher emotional intelligence would provide much better mechanisms for students to deal with the pressures of their studies. Emotional intelligence is said to be a better determining factor when qualifying the success of a person in any field of achievement.

To be emotionally intelligent, actually means that one has the greater capacity to understand oneself and the world in which they live. It might not be emotional intelligence that encourages a student to have more focus on the subject matter of their studies, which in turn would help him retain information, yet actually knowing the importance of being focused, could very well be learned through having a suitable emotional intelligence.

Emotionally intelligent students are more likely to show confidence and self belief, and they are also said to possess a higher capacity to handle problems, and to perform better in terms of academics. Of course this assumes that they are also endowed with an ideal level of intellect.
All of these parts when combined, will contribute to a person's self belief and confidence that will move him to perform better in class.

We should not only focus on the student retention alone however. There are various factors which must be considered, to help determine the extent of value thatmultiple intelligence has in the academic pursuits of students, such as communication among the students, and working in groups for example. Those who have higher emotional intelligence are seen to perform better in these areas, since they will have developed empathy, and a number of other social skills, which their conterparts may not have done to the same extent.

Emotionally intelligent students are basically those who have natural tendencies to understand other people's emotions and to empathize with them. They are also those who know themselves fully, and have the capability to influence the emotions and actions of other people.

Students who are equipped with higher emotional intelligence, also have the tendency to be a bit more conscious of themselves and others, and accordingly they create better relationships with themselves and also with those they are closely related to. These among with other issues, may cause obstructions in learning and therefore in retaining students. when they are not present to the same extent.

Those who are more lacking in emotional intelligence, are observed to display behavior that would contribute to their exit from higher education, more specifically frm college, and there are those who are not able to cope with the increasing pressure of quitting college. There are various factors that could eventually lead to the drop out of a student, but if we were to sum them up though, we would probably find that the majority of them all originated from a lack of emotional intelligence.

Many drop out from college due to failing grades or in the case of female students, due to becoming pregnant. If we were to look at these two conditions, it would be easy to conclude that they may actually have stemmed from deficient EQ.

Therefore it is not only in personal lives that developing EQ is productive. The cumulative value of EQ in a four year institution such as college, will be a good indication of it's failure or success.
