The Risks Associated With Creativity
from: Jim Holden - Staff WriterMost people think that creativity is simply all about being creative, and think only of what is nice and creative. That is most certainly one of the points of creativity, but that is not all that you should take notice of. Once you have actually accomplished the art of being creative, you also do have to take care of your creativity as it were.
When we say "taking care of it", we do not mean cultivation, in the same sense as bacteria for example, nor caressing it until it goes to sleep, as you would with a child. The meaning behind that statement is that you should at least be careful of whatever creative ideas you may have. You have to be a little discreet about them at first, because if you do not do so, then you are risking its safety so to speak, and it will probably be stolen and claimed by somebody else as their idea.
If you are a technological person for instance, with the use of computers and such like, you should at least put a password on your personal computer. This will prevent anyone else from unauthorised access of you programs and the risk of them duplicating or corrupting your personal information.
Another risk is the risk of having your creative works and plans destroyed, because it is the case that creativity cannot remain as just an idea in your head forever. You have to make your creative ideas tangible at some point in time, therefore when you do draw your idea, or create it in whatever artistic sphere your creative idea belongs to, make sure to take care of your product.
If you have produced a drawing, make sure that it does not get wet, as well as other kinds of precautionary measures. Do not risk having your work destroyed just because you were careless, or because you forgot about something that you really should not have forgotten. If you cannot take care of your own work, then you are really not cut out to be a creative artist.
You should also be aware of what kinds of artwork other artists have produced. You might believe that your work was original, and was indeed very creative, and yet you might well discover that someone else has done the exact same thing.
You really would not want to be branded a copycat, because originality is probably the best asset that artists possess, so do not lose it or have your reputation as an artist compromised. It goes without saying, that without your good name intact, no one will admire your works of art, no matter how good they might be.
Another important risk is that your work may well not be admired or appreciated. It is not a cast iron guarantee that just because you like your own work, and you think that it is nice, means that other people who look at it will like it as well.
Very often the work you do is loathed by other people because of individual factors, for instance because you have their ethnicity and their traditions, and you also have their cultures and genders to take in to account.
If you made something that was a little insensitive towards a certain country, then of course your artwork wwould not desired by those who belong to that country. Equally if you made something about rape or moldings of women's private body parts, it would not automatically follow that women in particular would immediately understand your purpose. or what you meant to convey with your work for that matter.
You have to set out to be more sensitive therefore, because what you perosnally might think and feel as an artist, are not felt and thought by everone else.
