It is often said that leaders are born, they are not made. Certainly one characteristic that needs to be present in every leader is self-confidence, but of course self-confidence is not inherent in everyone. This is one reason why only a few people can handle a group of people and be their leader, while the rest will remain their followers. Self-confidence is gained through experience and processes which build up a person's confidence.
So what are those processes, and what are those things that make a leader a successful one. How exactly do you build up self-confidence in leaders!
In trying to answer these questions, it should be recognized that leaders with self-confidence tend to aim for success, and since leaders are the head of the pack as it were, they are responsible for keeping the group together, and also focused in achieving the common goal. Leaders should possess these necessary characteristics in order to be good and successful ones.
The task of building up self-confidence in leaders is not acheived overnight, but rather it is a continuous process which needs to be tested and polished many times over until you reach acceptably high standards. The following points are methods on how to build up self-confidence in leaders:-
Proper training - Since leaders are just ordinary individuals who have different qualities, proper leadership training is essential. With the right training comes the confidence that leaders are properly equipped with those skills which are important in driving forward the success of their groups. Proper training must always be made available present so that the leader has the right tools he needs to function effectively.
Delegate trust - To effectively create leaders with self-confidence, you should demonstrate to them that they can be trusted. Showing them that you are confident of their leadership qualities, will surely greatly improve their self-confidence.
Building values - Ethics is important in any leadership scenario, not only because it is the proper way to conduct matters, but also because it builds confidence in the leaders. The reason for this is because leaders with values appropriate to the task, will certainly gain more respect among their members. and once a leader gains respect, his self-confidence rises.
Improving communication - Communication is the connection between the leader and the rest of the group. If the leader knows how to communicate properly, and how to connect with his members, then confidence will follow on as a natural course of events. It should be remembered that self-confidence is hard to find in those individuals who cannot express what they think and feel.
Use Correct Procedures - Self-confidence greatly improves through proper tests and procedures, and the leader with the right exposure to these will become more confident in what he does. This is exactly the opposite when people are not experienced, and although it can be said that practice makes perfect, that is not completely correct because practice that is not carried out in the right situation, is useless.
What you do need is the right venue for practice to become effective, which is also the best way to improve self-confidence in your leaders.
An Awareness Of Social Responsibility - Good leaders will never have enough confidence to properly execute things, if they are not aware of their social responsibilities. They will be like blind men guiding blind members unaware of what they will hit along the way. but anawareness of social responsibilities will take the blindfold off, and will keep leaders on track as to what they should be doing. This will also result in greater self-confidence.
All these points are extremely important, and must be present in all leader, so that they can lead their team towards a common goal, and so that they are respected in making their decisions, all of which of course builds their self-confidence to a much higher level.
