Two Types Of Communication Skillsfrom: Jim Holden - Guest Writer
Communication is one of the most fundamental assets of humans, and in fact when you stop and think about it, communication is not just a skill, it is a need. This is the reason why among the punishments of God in the Bible, the curse of the tower of Babel is considered one of the most destructive.
Studies have shown that the need for communication is inherent in every human being, and those self same studies have shown that communication skills are actually nurtured by a person's surrounding environment.
when they hear the word communication, people often think about words as the main form of communication, because they feel that the term communication, refers exclusively to the use of language.
When confronted with the fact that there are two types of communication, they automatically think of oral and written communication. This article will enlighten you to the fact that there is much more to communication skills than words.
1) Verbal - Verbal communication skills encompass all word usage, so this means that both oral and written words come under this category. People use and nurture this type of communication skill actively, although it can be argued that some people do not use it as much as others.
When using verbal communication skills, people tend to be more accurate in sending their messages, which is the reason why verbal communication is used as the media of education. Through the use of verbal communication skills, people can acquire knowledge the way others meant to send it to them.
Verbal communication skills can be developed in a variety of ways, and one of those ways is to converse with other people constantly. Actively engaging in conversation can help you encounter new words to enhance your verbal communication skills, and paying close attention to mass media is also a good idea, because you will be able to hear the correct pronunciation of a vast array of words.
In the case of writing, the best way to also help to enhance these verbal communication skills is to read a lot, because reading can give you an excellent idea about the spelling of words, and their correct usage as a means of effective communication.
2) Non-verbal - This type of communication skill makes use of symbols other than words to convey meaning, and generally this type of communication skill depends upon the interpretation of the receiver of the message. This means that the perception of the receiver is paramount, in determining how accurately or otherwise the message is delivered!
There are many ways in which we make use of non-verbal communication skills, but in truth, we barely notice them as being significant in the course of our daily lives. A common example of this would be when We make use of non-verbal communication skills through our expressions, so whenever we laugh or indeed cry, we are making use of our non-verbal communication skills.
It might be said that we do actually notice when we perform these actions, but many of the ways we make use of our non-verbal communication skills, often come subconsciously. A twitch of an eyebrow, the rhythmic tapping of a foot and many other little things that we do not really consciously control, do in fact send messages to other people.
Included in these types of communication skills, are the other ways through which we express ourselves to the world. We send out messages to others through the way that we dress for instance, and people can tell what an artist wants to express, through a painting. This and other situations serve to give you an idea of the considerable diversity of communication.
Our ability to send messages effectively through these various communication skills can often determine our status in society, and how well or otherwise we progress within it.
So go ahead and develop your communication skills, as a very high prioity for your long term ambitions, you will find that it is time well spent. Express yourself, do not hold yourself back!
