The Business of Communication for Success

If you can imagine other people as a revolver pointed at you, they are the gun and you are the trigger. You will learn to speak and tread carefully. It's an effective visual aid to avoid conflicts. If you can also imagine you are among people who are psychos underneath their dignified personas. Your communication skills will improve and set you up for business success.

Good speaking involves a good deal of spontaneity. It is a lot like negotiating, you have to focus on your goals but remain flexible. A lot of people are terrific writers but not so good at getting their ideas across via verbal communication. Writing is a form of thinking, and so is speaking. The difference is that you do not have the privilege to go back and correct yourself once you have spoken.

The way you ask questions and the type of questions you ask can have enormous impact. This is one of the keys to controlling the outcome of any verbal encounter.

Most people are either too shy or unskilled to offer compliments or ask questions. They do it in a way that causes embarrassment and resentment. Yet it can be so easy to pay people compliments and ask questions in a fun way to initiate a conversation.

Well things like that happen all the time in business and personal encounters. How do you think all those people who never went to college became wealthy and successful? Was it Experience? Or was it Education?

Communication, When you develop your verbal skills, you can:

o Get preferential treatment from travelling to shopping.

o Establish instant connections with partners and strangers.

o Become skilful at managing people's attitude, emotions, and reactions.

o Strengthen your emotional fulfilment with family and friends.

o Evaluate and offer recommendations to colleague without causing resentment.

o Deal effectively and productively with difficult customers or employee.

o Gain instant success and respect in any environment.

For every verbal communication we make there is a choice of four basic styles:

Assertive communication: When you care about the relationship and strive for a win/win situation.

Aggressive communication: Always involves manipulation

Passive communication: This is based on compliance and hopes to avoid confrontation at all costs

Passive - Aggressive communication: avoids direct confrontation (passive), but attempts to get even through manipulation (aggressive).

The most healthy communication style is the assertive communication, but different people based on status or culture favors either one of the four styles. A few people use a combination of these four styles, depending on the person, situation or past experiences.

Understanding the four basic communication styles empowers you with a choice and you can adopt the most appropriate technique for a given verbal scenario.
